Red lips look absolutely stunning when done well. The trick is to keep the eye make up subtle or the lip colour sheer - a heavy eye paired with a bold lip looks tacky. How heavy or light you make up should be depends on your occassion, facial features, hairstyle and personality - only you can judge what is appropriate. Finally, well groomed eyebrows and hair are important to look polished.

I just found this 1950s make up tutorial from VividMakeup. It features a gorgeous cat eye, that could easily be worn with a nude gloss for another gorgeous look, and of course red lipstick. I also love the way she did her hair. This would make a stunning, glamorous evening look.
